Professional ExperienceFrom 1965 until he retired in 2001, Dr. Dekker taught at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. During this time, from 1969-1973, he was a NSF Science Faculty Fellowship Awardee, and he attended Stanford University and received his Ph.D. in 1973. After graduating from Rose Polytechnic Institute, he was in the Technical Development Program (TDP) of Sandia Corporation, in Albuquerque, NM. All TDPs attended the University of New Mexico at Sandia's expense while working 1/2 time at Sandia. After receiving his M.S. in 1963 he transferred within Sandia to their Livermore, California office.During the summers Don worked for the following Companies. Koch Materials Company, Terre Haute, IN 1993-2001; Elf Asphalt, Terre Haute, IN 1983-1993; Bituminous Materials Company, Terre Haute, IN 1977-83; Center for Tech. Assessment and Policy Studies, RHIT 1975; J. I. Case Company, Terre Haute, IN 1974; NASA-ASEE Summer Faculty Design Program, Stanford, CA 1970; American Electric Power, Huntington, WV 1968; Caterpillar Tractor Company, Peoria, IL 1967.Don was very active in ASEE. Some of his ASEE leadership positions include: Chairman, Zone II, 1986-1988 and ASEE Board of Directors General Chairman, Frontiers in Education Conference, 1987 Chairman, Illinois-Indiana Section 1983-84.He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, Blue Key National Honor Fraternity, and Pi Tau Sigma.During his summer activities he received two patents - Compacting Apparatus, 5,334,005, 1994, Assigned to Koch Materials Compacting Apparatus; 5,336,367, 1994, Assigned to Koch MaterialsDon taught a large variety of required and elective courses over the years including Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics I & II, Kinematics, Machine Dynamics, Statics, Dynamics, Vibrations, Systems Design, Engineering Design, Thermal Design, Machine Design, Introduction to Design, Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, Measurement Laboratory, Materials Engineering, Graphical Communications, Creative Engineering Design, Air Conditioning, Internal Combustion Engines, Solar Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Introduction to Engineering ManagementDon has made over 40 presentations and papers. Many of these were at ASEE Conferences. Several were at the International Conference on Engineering Design, and some asphalt research papers were presented at the Petersen Asphalt Research Conferences. |
