Kumar Elected as Fellow of the American Society of Metals (ASM)

Dr. Ashok Kumar, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been chosen to be a Fellow of the American Society of Metals (ASM). He will be inducted on September 18, 2007 at the ASM Annual Awards Banquet in Detroit, MI.

The ASM Board of Trustee selects approx. 25 to 30 ASM Fellows every year on basis of good personal reputation and distinguished accomplishments in some phase of materials science, engineering or manufacturing as evidenced by outstanding performance in the field of employment as recognized by the nominee's single most significant contribution through work and sustaining a high level of performance in the nominee's field over a period of years in carrying out responsibilities.

Dr. Ashok Kumar is an international leader in the field of materials science & engineering and has made significant contributions in research and development of surface engineered coatings for multifunctional applications. His early work on the development of oxide based coatings materials (superconductor and ferroelectric) has prompted a number of current research programs including prestigious NSF NIRT grant to develop nanocrystalline diamond for MEMS and biomedical applications. Dr. Kumar has published 2 textbooks, edited 6 proceeding books, 3 invited review articles, 5 book chapters including 160 reviewed articles and has presented approximately 190 papers in regional and national conferences. He has been an invited speaker and session organizer at many national and international meetings. Dr. Kumar is on the editorial board of two journals related to materials science and engineering. He has supervised 3 Ph.D. students (currently 7 are pursuing Ph.D.) and 38 MS students for their thesis/dissertation as chairman of the committee. Many of his students won awards such as USF outstanding thesis award, AVS student poster award, and employed in prestigious companies like INTEL, Micron, GE, Applied Materials, Motorola, and IBM.

Before joining USF, Dr. Kumar as Cluster Director won a 3.5 million dollars of research funding for the State of Alabama under NASA Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Program (EPSCoR) program at the University of South Alabama. His duties as Cluster Leader was to supervise the statewide Advanced Materials research program comprising of five major universities and six small colleges with two Historically Black College Universities ( HBCU’s) in the State of Alabama. Since joining USF in 2000, Dr. Kumar has established a multi-disciplinary research laboratories for excellence in advanced thin films/coatings for microelectronic and MEMS applications, superhard coatings for tribological applications, and specific coatings for biomedical applications. The main focus of the research projects is to improve the basic and applied understanding of thin film materials synthesis, characterization, and properties of interest for industrial applications. He has received in excess of 7 million dollar of research funding as PI and more than 17 million dollars as Co-PI. His research has been supported from federal agencies (NSF, NASA, and DOE) and private companies, such as, Sematech, Honeywell, General Motors, Lucent Technologies, Novellus, IBM, and Cabot Microelectronics etc.

His excellence as an researchers has been recognized by a number of honors, including ASM-IIM Visiting Lecture Award (2007), Theodore and Venette Askounes Ashford Distinguished Scholar Award (2006), USF Outstanding Faculty Research Achievement Award (2004), USF President Faculty Excellence Award (2003), NSF Faculty Early Career Development Award (2000), National Research Council Twining Fellowship Award (1997) and, NSF and DOE EPSCoR Young Investigator Awards (1996-97).
