ASME Student Section Honors and Awards 2004
A large student delegation participated in all
contests and competitions at the 2004 ASME Regional Student Conference,
April 1-3, in Mobile, Alabama.
USF won awards in the Ingersoll-Rand Contest, Old
Guard Oral Competition, Student Design Contest, and Outstanding Student
Member. Certificates of Participation were also presented to our students
in the Poster and Technical Web Poster competitions.
Ingersoll-Rand Contest (1st Place)
The fundamental purpose is to encourage engineering students to be
total professionals by participating in technical events that expand on
their academic pursuits, by building character toward good citizenship,
and by learning more about real world engineering. It recognizes those
student sections that show outstanding achievement in a manner by which
they conduct their affairs. USF scored 2133 points. This is the first
time 2000 points has been achieved in Region XI.
Old Guard Oral Competition (2nd Place)
It is recognized that an engineer, like all professionals, must
possess a well-developed ability to communicate, both orally and in
writing. This competition is designed to emphasize the value of an ability
to deliver oral presentations. The Sea-Lock Prototype Design,
by: Rich Ellis took 2nd place.
Student Design Contest (3rd Place)
Problem Description: “Mine Madness Field” –
Design and build a vehicle that will retrieve six
simulated mines from a minefield and place them into a controlled
receiving area within an allotted time of three minutes. USF vehicle,
The Mechanical Bull, designed by Shane McGoldrick, Scott Nelson and
Christina Hilmersson performed well and earned loud cheers and applause
from RSC, RAC and ROB members.
Outstanding Student Member Award - Dennis
Watkins
This award is
presented annually to a student making truly significant contributions to
the success of the Student Section.
The extraordinary success in the Ingersoll-Rand
Contest required a dedicated team effort. As Vice Chair and Activities
Chair, Dennis Watkins planned, organized and participated in community
service, tours and meetings. The ASME officers and members agree that his
leadership and motivational skills, coupled with his tireless efforts
throughout the year was key in achieving 1st place. |
