Student Organizations
Several opportunities on campus are available to the students for membership in technical, professional and/or honor societies associated with the Mechanical Engineering Program. The following organizations are available to the Mechanical Engineering students.
Mechanical Engineering Technical/Professional Societies:
American Society of Mechanical Engineers
This student section has a large enrollment, and full calendar of events. It has been judged as "Top Student Chapter" in the southeastern region for 6 Years out of the last 8. Faculty Adviser: Craig LuskAmerican Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers
This society caters to engineers and students who have an interest in HVAC and related sciences. The student section at USF is a relatively new one, but it already offers a busy schedule of meetings, speakers, social gatherings and site visits
Faculty Adviser:American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
This student section has won the "Best in Region", and "Most Improved Section" awards for the southeastern USA, and organizes many activities including rocket-launch competitions.
Faculty Adviser: Jose PorteiroSociety of Automotive Engineers
This society draws engineers and students who have a passion for automobiles and racing. The student section is busy developing cars for the Baja SAE and Formula SAE competitions.

Other Engineering Societies The Department provides office space for the ASME, AIAA, ASRAE and SAE. In addition, the Department provides partial funding to the ASME Regional Student Conference. The regional chapter of ASHRAE in Tampa provides funding for meals for any student member who wishes to attend a regular meeting and provides Student Awards for achievement by students. The Department also provides partial travel funds for the students participating in SAE sponsored student competitions such as Mini Baja.
The SAE student chapter has been highly successful in the Mini Baja competition. They were ranked first for overall combined score three competitions in 2004 and were the national champions. In year 2006, they received 2nd overall rank. In 2006, they started participating in the Formula race for the first time, and they ranked 42nd this year.
The ASME Student Chapter has been extremely active and provides an excellent program. Over the past two years at Regional Student Conference (RSC) our students have won the following the following awards:
1st place Ingersoll Rand contest for Most Active Student Section
3rd place Ingersoll Rand contest for Most Active Student Section
1st Place Old Guard Oral Competition Presentation on “Microturbine-powered Hovercraft”
2nd Place Old Guard Oral Competition Presentation on “ASME USF Electric Race Car”
2nd Place Student Design Contest Presentation on “Hot Rod”
1st Place Technical Website Competition of “Sustainable Energy in Developing Countries”
Honorable Mention for entry in Student Design Contest “PneumatiaCaster 9000”
Honorable Mention for entry in Student Design Contest “Rocky IV”
Honorable Mention for entry in Old Guard Oral Competition “The Beach Bull”
