FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING (FE) EXAMINATION

Starting Summer 2000, you are NOT required to take the Fundamentals of Engineering FE Exam as part of graduation requirements.  However, all students obtaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering are encouraged to take the FE exam prior to graduation. Review manuals are made available to students taking the FE exam by the ASME Student Section and review sessions are presented by the faculty in the College of Engineering.

In the past, students were required to take the exam for graduation.  A significant percent of these students passed the FE exam on their first attempt although some of them did not put forth a reasonable effort since passing was not required for graduation, may not be needed in their future profession, and some students had no plans to live or work in the United States.

Therefore, the data obtained from the results of the FE examination was misleading, and it was decided to remove the requirement to take the FE exam.  A passed FE Examination is going to be a big plus in finding certain type of jobs where a professional license is required such as HVAC, consulting, construction, patents, and law.

After passing the FE Examination and several years (four in most states) of engineering experience, you are eligible to take the PE (Professional Engineering) Examination.  For information about the FE and PE examination, go to the NCEES (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying) site.

Why should you become a PE?
